Final meal requests

jen-x points us to the final meal requests of death row prisoners in Texas. I find it unbelievably moving. You can find out more about each prisoner, and what they did to end up on death row, which tends to lessen the sympathy one feels towards these young men (as they mostly are) as you think about their lives being
prematurely ended. It still makes uncomfortable reading for anyone who
has watched The Green Mile, however. You can also see who is awaiting execution. Weird. Texas seems quite proud of the fact that it leads the US in executions.

This post is for the family of Mack Hill who met his end yesterday.

Men Only

Just enjoying marmite on toast and a cup of tea so much that I thought I'd blog it. It's that good. Went to the pub earlier, then watched the rather disturbing Men Only on Channel 4 when I came in. I didn't even want to watch it particularly but it kept me hooked. Young men do get themselves in a tizzy sometimes, don't they? Thought it was just a touch on the clichéd side, but the writers did aim to present a full-on grim picture of "disaffected" white male youth. What exactly is "disaffected" supposed to mean anyway? Slightly miffed or pulsating with violent anger? It sounds like the former, but is usually applied to the latter.

Ian Paisley says NO...

I know line dancing is really naff (just my opinion) but this is ridiculous. (via fongueusemare)

Easter holidays again

According to this BBC report today, teaching unions do not think a six-term year makes educational sense, after all. My point about the religious significance of Easter in modern Britain still holds though. As does my point about the abysmal Christian Institute, if you read the BBC article closely...
